What Vaanam did to me

I went to the cinema expecting only to be entertained.

Well, I did get entertained. But most importantly, Vaanam stirred something inside me i can confidently say very few other movies can.

We all have probably came across a storyline similar to Vaanam's storyline at some point of time. But i guess the power in this movie lies in the splendid performance of the entire cast.

On the way back home after watching the movie, I started analyzing everything I did in my life. I realized that like most of the characters in the movie, I too have been too engrossed in life. Trying to complete the highest level of education, making money, having fun.

In the process, I have actually forgot the main purpose God sent me here, which is to MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

What have I done for the past 22 years? I've always had dreams about changing the world and helping as many people as I can. But how much have I done to achieve all this?

I've decided on a few things to do. I'll be taking baby steps and hopefully one day, will be able to make a BIG difference.

What about all of you? Are you like me and the characters in Vaanam? If yes, do take a moment to ponder on your life purpose and find ways to make your life worthwhile. At the end of the day, no one really cares about how successful you are or how much money you have made. It's the good deeds that you did which will be etched in everybody's mind.

For making me realize all this, i thank Vaanam. Beautiful movie indeed.

Vaanam review, from the eyes of a Punjabi girl.

Initially, the plan was to watch Vaanam only after 2 weeks with my friends. But suddenly I had the urge to watch the movie on the day of it's release in Malaysia. So i did. 6pm show on Saturday :)

Yes i went alone to the cinema. So many people were like 'hey its not safe bla3' okay will talk about that in another post ;)

Let's talk about Vaanam now!! :)

Brief synopsis
This movie is basically about 5 different people with different lives and how an incident brings all of them together in d climax. The main characters are Simbhu (as Cabel Raja), Bharath (as Bharath, a rock musician), Anushka (as Saroja, a prostitute), Prakash Raj (as Rahim) and Saranya (as Lakshmi)
* something that i just found out - the 5 characters in this movie represent the 5 different elements. Cool!!

Performance
Main Cast
1. Simbhu - probably one of his finest performance yet. He has matured tremendously, remarkable acting. I really loved the fact that he was extremely believable in the emotional scenes (particularly the scene where Saranya's mama was pulling his leg and begging him not to take the money) , and his facial expressions are superb!

2. Prakash Raj - He is undoubtedly one of the most talented actor in the industry and it is always a pleasure to watch him act as you can really relate to all the characters he is playing. My favorite scene of his from Vaanam is the part when Sonia Agarwal suffers from a miscarriage and his reaction to it.

3. Saranya - Wonderfull actress i must say. She portrays her role as a mother longing for the return of her son perfectly.

4. Anushka - Firstly, i must say that she looks absolutely gorgeous! And her acting was superb, her facial expressions, her body language etc, everything was damn good. Impressive. But might need to improve further on her dancing.

5. Bharath - Am i the only one who thinks that his tremendous talent and good looks are wasted in this movie? He did execute his role very well but i feel that he was not given much scope in this movie, and his part and story wasn't very important for the entire movie. Having said that, I still have to agree that Bharath is indeed a fine actor, nice to watch his transition from his days acting in Boys and now :)

Supporting Cast
1. Sonia Agarwal - Didn't have much scope but essayed her role very well. She did have good chemistry with Prakash Raj.

2. Jasmine Bhasin - Played the role of Simbhu's love interest. My least favorite in Vaanam. Probably the role required her to act in a very baby-ish and childlike manner but i found it to be rather annoying instead of cute. Lacking in facial expressions so she doesn't come off as very convincing. And the worst part is she has absolutely no chemistry with Simbhu. But then again, she is new in the industry so I'm sure she will improve with time :)

3. Prakash Raj's brother - Absolute eye candy. Didn't have much scope but he gave a good performance.

4. Saranya's mama - P-E-R-F-E-C-T. I am impressed with the range of emotions he displayed, and his voice oozes emotions. And at the end scene when he answers back to the money lender, it was super cute!

5. Santhanam - Funny as always. Funny but not bone tickling funny. Awesome chemistry with Simbhu.

6. Cable Raja's uncle - Love his role and the way he acted. Effortless yet very convincing.

7. Saroja's "akka" - One of the shining stars in Vaanam, and one of my favorite character. Very convincing and believable and can really dance!

What I like about Vaanam
1. Terrific idea to have 5 very different stories with 1 climax
2. Wonderful selection of actors
3. Wonderful screenplay
4. Brilliant performance by most of the actors
5. Good lesson to be learned from the movie
6. Good background score

What I dislike about Vaanam
1. It was a little bit draggy in the first half
2. Cable Raja song not included (whyyyyy????)

Overall, ill rate this movie 8/10. Loved it. It managed to make me smile, laugh, be angry and cry, all in the span of 3 hours. Definitely worth the watch.
